Training

We are a training practice, which means we are committed to training the doctors of the future, and we train both registrars and medical students.

Registrars

We have been training registrars for over 30 years and Dr Aidan Savage is currently responsible for their training.

Registrars are attached to the practice for 6 or 12 months at a time. They are fully qualified doctors who have a great deal of hospital experience and who are now gaining experience of working in general practice with the view to becoming a general practitioner once their training is complete.

Registrars hold their own surgeries as well as sitting in with other doctors or health professionals. If you do not wish to have them present during one of these consultations, please inform the doctor or health professional you are seeing. Occasionally the registrar may video some consultations as part of their training. You will be informed on your arrival at reception if that surgery is being recorded and you will be asked to sign a consent form for this. If you do not wish to participate, please inform the receptionist and your consultation will not be recorded.

Medical Students

We take medical students from Keele University (based at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital) on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday. They are here to gain experience of General Practice and as part of this experience, they may sit in on some consultations. If you do not wish them to be present during your consultation, please inform the doctor before the consultation commences – neither the student or the doctor will be offended

We also encourage patients to be more involved as the students’ curriculum require them to see patients by themselves in order to take a medical history and conduct an examination (if appropriate) of the problem which you are coming to see the doctor about. This should take about 20 minutes. They will then present the information to a practice doctor with the patient present. The problem will be discussed and the practice doctor will initiate any treatment necessary. This will also take about 20 minutes. A patient will need to allow approximately 40 minutes for the combined appointment.

Dr Tim Kieniewicz is responsible for medical student training.
